Reflections from a Daughter and a Seniors Real Estate Specialist: Honouring Fathers and the Gift of Time
As a Seniors Real Estate Specialist—and more personally, as a daughter of a senior—I’ve come to realise that what most dads truly want, especially as they grow older, is not the latest gadget or another item to add to the shelf. It's not about "stuff." It’s about time. Your time. Your attention. Your presence. It’s the simple moments that matter the most: a walk together, sharing a favourite story, sitting over a cup of coffee, or even sending an updated photograph just to show you’re thinking of them. These small but meaningful gestures are the gifts that truly touch a dad’s heart.
I’m particularly grateful to still be able to celebrate Father’s Day with my dad. He’s 99 years old, and each year with him feels more precious than the last. Every visit, every hug, and every conversation I get to share with him is a gift I never take for granted.
For those of you reading this who may no longer have your father around to celebrate with, I encourage you to reflect on the memories you hold dear. The connection you shared, the moments you cherished—they live on in your heart. Perhaps you might want to take a moment this Father’s Day to remember the things he loved or the lessons he taught you. You can still honour his memory by doing something that connects you to him.
In my work with older adults and their families,—it’s the simple act of being present. That is the most valuable gift we can give, both to our parents and to ourselves.
So, this Father’s Day, whether your dad is near or far, take a moment to pause. Spend some time—remembering, reminiscing, or simply being in the moment together, even if that moment is just in your heart.
