Multigenerational Living

Welcome to AT THE ISLAND WITH HELM! I’m Janet HELM.
As a Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES®) the topic of seniors rightsizing to communities to be closer to their adult children and or grandchildren comes up often. Often times the move is just talked about, and then because of a sudden health change, typically a fall, the senior can’t move back home alone, and the decision to move is made quickly.
Part of HELM’s move management system provides resources and guidance, a strategy to help with that transition whether rushed or not. Ideally with a plan, as then rushed, decisions aren’t made and already stressful time is less stressful! I recently spoke with a client, whose inlaws will be selling their family home they’ve lived in for decades as they are having a home custom built for them closer to her and her husband and kids -who live in a different part of the city. Everyone is excited as the family will be closer, so grandparents can get to know their grandchildren and the parents can age in place with closer hands-on support. As the home is a year away from being built, they’ve already started the process of rightsizing by paring down their belongings, and making any minor repairs if necessary to prepare their home to ensure it sells for top dollar. Part of HELM’s move management system is also suggested to encourage seniors to get to know their new neighbourhood. They may keep their same doctor and dentist- most do, yet what about a new pharmacy, grocery store, or coffee shop. So before they go to their children’s home for the next Sunday dinner, I encourage people to take the extra time to visit coffee shops, and grocery stores, to see which they prefer. Local rec centres are a great place to get information on senior groups and activities. They might even make new friends even before they move!
For more of our tips on rightsizing- give HELM a call, I’d love to be your guide! #seniorsadvocate #seniorsrealestatespecialist #HELM #morethanjustamove #northvancouver #westvancouver #squamish #burnaby #portcoquitlam #coquitlam #anmore #portmoody #pittmeadows #mapleridge #seniors #family #grateful
