The desire to age in place

is reshaping our approach to architecture and interior design, with a continued emphasis on safety, accessibility, and comfort. Gone are the days of clinical-looking items for your home as you age in place. By incorporating thoughtful modifications such as grab bars, improved lighting, walk-in showers, hands-free smart technology, and levers instead of doorknobs, we can create environments that empower people to live independently while enhancing their quality of life while keeping a sense of style.

One of the simplest yet most effective modifications for improving safety is the installation of grab bars. These sturdy handles can be placed in bathrooms, hallways, and other areas where support is needed. Available in various styles and finishes, grab bars can blend seamlessly with existing decor, providing both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Cantu in Vancouver has a lovely showroom with a variety of options to choose from. More options are available even at pharmacies and online. Online, simply type: stylish grabs , and you'll find a variety to choose from!   It’s very important to have the grab bars installed specifically for your needs by a professional installer. At HELM, we are happy to recommend designers and contractors who can collaborate with you to modify your home so you can age happily and safely in place. Aging in place is becoming a more viable option for many and now you have more stylish options.

Back to School: A Fresh Start for Older Adults This Fall

As the air turns crisp and the leaves begin to change, there's an undeniable sense of renewal in the atmosphere. Fall brings with it the familiar buzz of back-to-school season—an exciting time for students of all ages. But who says this season of learning is just for kids and young adults? For seniors, fall is an ideal time to embrace the back-to-school vibe and embark on a new learning adventure.

Why Go Back to School?

Lifelong learning has countless benefits. For older adults, continuing education is more than just gaining new knowledge; it's about staying engaged, mentally stimulated, and socially connected. Studies have shown that learning new skills can improve cognitive function, enhance memory, and even reduce the risk of dementia. Plus, it's a fantastic way to meet new people and expand your social circle.

Opportunities for Learning

There are more opportunities than ever for seniors to dive into new subjects, whether it's picking up a hobby, exploring a passion, or even starting a new career path. Many community and senior centers offer a wide range of classes and workshops tailored specifically to older adults. These can include anything from art and music lessons to fitness classes, technology workshops, and more. Best of all, these programs often focus on creating a fun and supportive environment.

ℹ️ For more information, visit your local municipal government website or call 311 if it's available in your area.

Online Learning for the Modern Senior

In addition to local offerings, the digital age has opened up a world of online learning opportunities. Many universities and colleges provide free online courses on a variety of subjects, from history and literature to computer science and foreign languages. Websites like Coursera, edX, and even platforms like YouTube host a wealth of courses and tutorials that can be accessed from the comfort of home. These courses are a fantastic way to learn at your own pace and explore topics that have always piqued your interest.

The Social Benefits of Learning

Beyond the intellectual stimulation, going back to school offers seniors a chance to build new friendships and strengthen their community connections. Whether you're attending a pottery class at the local senior center or participating in an online book club, these experiences can foster a sense of belonging and purpose. Many seniors find that learning with peers who share similar interests makes the experience even more enjoyable.

Tips for Getting Started

  1. Start Small: If you're unsure where to begin, start with a short workshop or an online course that interests you. This can help you ease into the learning process without feeling overwhelmed.

  2. Explore Different Subjects: Don't hesitate to try out different classes. Whether it's painting, learning a new language, or mastering a new tech skill, variety can keep the learning process exciting.

  3. Stay Social: Choose classes that offer opportunities for social interaction. Group activities, discussion-based courses, or workshops with hands-on projects can help you connect with others.

  4. Set Your Own Pace: Remember, there's no rush. Take the time to enjoy the process and absorb the material at your own pace.

Embrace the Season of Learning

Fall is the season of change and growth. It's a time to rekindle old interests or spark new passions. By going back to school, seniors can enjoy a fulfilling, enriching experience that not only nurtures the mind but also brings joy and connection to everyday life.

So why not take the plunge? With countless classes, workshops, and online courses available, your next learning journey is just a click or a phone call away. Whether you're looking to stay mentally sharp, meet new people, or simply have fun, there's no better time than now to embrace the back-to-school spirit.

Happy Learning, Janet

Celebrating Seniors!

October 1st is right around the corner. Who will be celebrating? October 1 is a national day to celebrate seniors in Canada! It is designated as an occasion for all Canadians to appreciate and celebrate older adults! The intent of National Seniors Day is to showcase the contribution seniors make to Canadian society and the Canadian economy.  “seniors contribute in many ways, including by sharing their experiences, expertise, and knowledge with other generations...The contribution of seniors is invaluable and ongoing.” I totally agree! As one who works with older adults, I am inspired daily and grateful for their past and ongoing contribution.  Check back here for events happening throughout the Greater Vancouver area. How to prepare? Check out Seniors Canada Facebook page, a great resource for all things seniors related!  The photo is of my dad and I at HELM Lodge, Sasamat Outdoor Centre in Belcarra.  I’ll be celebrating my dad, Elmer Helm. He was the first Executive Director of Association of Neighbourhood Houses BC  and spearheaded acquiring the land for the community camp. When he retired, they named the Lodge after him, recognizing his contribution to the community. Who will you be celebrating?
